　1967年にイギリスにてシングル「アーノルド・レーン」でデビュー。当時のメンバーはシド・バレット（G/Vo）、ロジャー・ウォーターズ（B/Vo）、リチャード・ライト（Key/Vo）、ニック・メイスン（Dr）の4人。サイケやブルース、フォークなどを取り込んだロックに、叙情性と浮遊感を昇華させた幻想的なサウンドで人気を博すと同時に、創意に富んだアルバムタイトルやジャケットデザイン、また壮大なライヴ演出等々、芸術的な側面でも高い評価を得ました。
　また、プログレッシブ・ロックの歴史のなかで最も商業的成功を収めたバンドであり、代表アルバム『The Dark Side Of The Moon（狂気）』は5,000万枚、『The Wall』は3,000万枚のメガ・セールスを記録。幾度ものメンバーチェンジや、活動休止、再結成を繰り返しますが、2007年ライトの死を機にバンドは意気阻喪。2014年、20年ぶりの作品『永遠/TOWA』がラストアルバムとなりました。
