1934年カナダ・モントリオール生まれ。コロンビア大学在学中に初めての詩集を発表し、1961年の2作目『The Spice-Box of Earth』がベストセラーを記録。以降、詩人や作家として活躍します。1967年、詩集に収められていた「スザンヌ」がジュディ・コリンズによってカバーされたことで脚光を浴び、拠点を米国に移してシンガー・ソングライターとしてデビュー。その深遠な詞の世界と、陰影のある独特な歌声で支持され、母国や米国以上にヨーロッパでブレイク。1974年パリで開催されたコンサートでは13万人の聴衆を集めています。
　以後40年以上に渡り活動し、カナダ勲章、アストゥリアス皇太子賞文学部門（スペイン）、ロックの殿堂入りなど、数々の名誉を獲得。世代・国境・ジャンルを超え、世界中で高い評価を得たコーエンでしたが、2016年アルバム『You Want It Darker』を発表した翌月に、82歳で帰らぬ人となりました。
　番組では、14枚のオリジナルアルバムにライブ盤も併せ、16時間にわたり特集をお届けします。
